The Educational Leader
Educational leadership provides many advantages for providing opportunities for professional growth and organizational development. Educational leadership is a unique role and to better understand this position I have identified and I apply five competencies of leadership: know your purpose, understand how systems change, cultivate the potential in others, develop intelligence, and construct team dynamics.
From day one we must conform to the team concept. In teamwork we have a sense of purpose, understand our job, cultivated the best from each other, and learn from one another. Through this complex system of professional development is forged team dynamics. In education and other organizations, this dynamic is often referred to as synergy where the sum of the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. Each individual contributes to the overall goals. People motivate others to act on the best ideas and this means an overall greater effort. When people and the work are aligned with the goals of the organization, a clearer sense of coherence emerges.
Why the Compass Star
An application of a contemporary leadership lens on knowledge construction raises many questions and offers several examples that make a good argument. The rigidities of the dichotomies in how knowledge is constructed are often the problem. I see that right versus wrong and good versus bad are examples of notions understood in our youth. But, by evolved thinking most come to see multiple perspectives on single issues and all being possible or legitimate. 'Rightness' and 'wrongness' then becomes more of a personal value judgment, and yet the integrity of that what is different does not have to be devalued or worse dehumanized. Moreover, when multiplicity reaches it's limitations and an issue at hand is steeped in ambiguity, then what is left by which to navigate may only be but a simple compass -- a moral compass! I have come to realize that perhaps that old and weathered technology is still one of the finest tools to posses. In the end we reveal an illuminating concept – educational leaders. Educational leaders being the ones who pursue meaning and who are aware of the mystery in all things. Those who are educational leaders exhilarate others as they demonstrate an open, searching approach to life. Learning leaders are today’s most coveted leaders for personal, professional, and/or organizational renewal, innovation, and sustainability.
